“Then Jesus said, ‘This is what God’s kingdom is like. It’s as though someone scatters seed on the ground, then sleeps and wakes night and day. The seed sprouts and grows, but the farmer doesn’t know how.'” (Mark 4:26-27)
Saturday the 20th was quite the day at Colchester Federated Church with both the Tag Sale and Car Wash happening at the same time. This edition of Thursday Thoughts is really just a big thank you!
Thank you to Dick who organized the Car Wash and to Avis who organized the Tag Sale. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to make both events successful–from the crew who sorted and organized donations throughout the week, helped sell items, and cleaned up after the sale to the crew who washed over 50 cars on Saturday. Thank you to those who donated items to the Tag Sale. Thank you to those who came through the Car Wash. Thank you to everyone who helped advertise the events and spread the word to your networks.
CFC relies on fundraisers like these to help with the costs associated with running our church. Though I would also like to think that events like these are good in other ways too, to help remind people that we are here right in the center of town doing good work and being of service and to work together as a congregation in that “team spirit” way to accomplish something together that none of us can do alone.
I hope that events like these help make visiting our church in general less intimidating for people. Have you ever gone to a new church and you weren’t even sure the right entrance to use? Let alone, worrying that you are going to sit in someone’s pew. The horror! (We know that there’s not assigned seats in church, but you know exactly what I’m talking about). Yikes, it can be hard to visit a new place. A way that I think about this is that when we host events that are open to our community (or we open our doors to community organizations to host their events at our church) it’s a form of seed scattering like Jesus talked about. We don’t know if and how those seeds may sprout and grow, but we still need to scatter those seeds. And you just never know what the future may hold.
Anyway, thank you for the ways that each of you helps our church to be a loving, welcoming community of faith open to one and all.
Love,
Pastor Lauren
