Watching in Darkness and Starlight
(Luke 2:8-14)

The field was enveloped in darkness and starlight.
An ordinary night, like any other.
Simple shepherds keeping watch.
Watching the sleeping lambs nestled against their mothers for comfort and warmth.
Watching out for predators lurking in the night’s shadows.
Watching the distant city asleep, candles extinguished for the night.

A blaze of light illuminates the night.
The glory of the Lord shines, blinding light.
Fear.  Uncertainty.  Wonder.
Mostly fear—it had been just another night.
An ordinary night, like any other.
And then: “Do not be afraid.”
And then: our lives would never be the same.
Let us go now to Bethlehem.
